==User data==
*'''Real name:''' This may be used to give you attribution for your work. Other users of the wiki will not see this! It probably won't be used for anything, either, though, as most wikis will credit you by your username.
*'''E-mail address:''' Your preferred email address. It is '''strongly recommended''' that you give an email address you use and are likely to have for a long time. If you forget your password, this is the only way you can get it sent back to you!
*'''Nickname:''' The name you would like to have displayed when you sign posts. If you leave this blank, posts will be signed with your username. (For example, if your username is "jbrown123" but you would like to sign as "Jeff", put "Jeff" in the nickname field. If you would like to sign as "jbrown123", leave it blank.) There are lots of ways you can customize your signature using HTML. If you'd like to see how you can do that, see the Central help page at [[Wikia:Help:Signature]]. The "Raw Signature" box is for those using more advanced customized signatures, which you can find out about at the signature help page.
*'''Language:''' Which language you would like the interface (buttons, system messages) to be in. This can be different from the language that the wiki is in! The articles will stay in whichever language they were originally written in.
*'''Change password:''' Use these fields if you would like to change your password. "Remember across sessions" stores a cookie on your machine so that you do not have to enter your password every time. (If you use a public computer, such as a library or school lab computer, you probably ''don't'' want to do this. But if you're using your home computer that no one else uses, it can be convenient.)
*'''Email:''' Check the box if you do not want other logged-in users to be able to contact you via email. (Normally, the "e-mail this user" link, which is on the side of the screen when you look at any user's user page, will allow users to email you without seeing your email address.)
==Skin==
Select one of the options to decide how you want the pages to look. MonoBook is the default, and there are many things that look or work better on this skin than others. Select the "preview" link by any skin to test it out before selecting it.
==Files==
*'''Limit images on image description pages to:''' allows you to choose a size that will fit on your monitor when you click on an image to see the information about it.
*'''Thumbnail size:''' allows you to choose how big images should be when small "thumbnail" versions are put on a page. Choose a size that you like and works best with your monitor.
==Date format==
Choose the option that best matches your preferred date format. (Several options, including American and European date formats, are available.)
==Time zone==
Specify how many hours your time zone is away from GMT/UTC so that times show in your local time. Clicking "fill in from browser" should do this automatically. If it doesn't, try finding your offset from [[Wikipedia:List_of_time_zones|the Wikipedia list]].
==Editing==
Options with "{JavaScript)" require you to have JavaScript turned on in your browser.
*'''Rows/Columns:''' This sets the size of the edit box for when you edit a page.
*'''Enable section editing via [edit] links:''' When selected, this allows you to edit only part of a page at a time by showing an "edit" link for each subheading. This makes it easier to find the part you wanted to change, though it does clutter the page with "edit" links.
*'''Enable section editing by right clicking on section titles (JavaScript)''': When this is selected, right-clicking on a subheading will let you begin editing that section.
*'''Edit pages on double click (JavaScript):''' When selected, this wil cause double-clicking on a link to another wiki page open an edit window for that page.
*'''Edit box has full width:''' If this box is checked, the edit box (when you click "Edit this page") will be the width of the browser window.
*'''Show edit toolbar (JavaScript):''' A toolbar with editing buttons can be displayed. (A few browsers don't support it yet.)
*'''Show preview on first edit:''' When pressing the edit button or otherwise following a link to an edit page, show not only the edit box but also the rendered page, just like after pressing "Show preview". This is especially useful when viewing a template, because even just viewing, not editing, typically requires both.
*'''Show preview before edit box:''' If you select this option, the preview will be displayed above the edit box when you click the "Show preview" button while editing a page.
*'''Add pages you edit to your watchlist:''' If this option is selected, any pages that you create or modify will be automatically added to your "watchlist", a list of pages you can select to keep track of.
*'''Mark all edits minor by default:''' This option automatically selects the "This is a minor edit" checkbox when you edit pages. If you will be doing a lot of small edits, such as fixing typos or links, rather than writing new material, you may wish to select this option.
*'''Use external editor by default:''' Use an external program to edit pages rather than your browser window. This requires extra setup; see the central help page at [[Wikia:Help:External editors]].
*'''Use external diff by default:''' Show "diffs" (the difference between one version of a page and another) in an external program rather than in your browser window. This requires extra setup; see [[Wikia:Help:External editors]].
==Recent changes and stubs==
Options with "{JavaScript)" require you to have JavaScript turned on in your browser.
*'''Threshold for stub display:''' This allows you to show links to very short pages ("stubs") in a different color. The number here is the size (in bytes) of the largest page that should be shown in this color. <!--include a rough guide: how many words is 100 bytes?---> Leaving this number as 0 will show all links to existing pages in the same color.
*'''Titles in recent changes:''' Select the number of changes to be shown on the [[Special:Recentchanges|Recent Changes]] and [[Special:Watchlist|Watchlist]] pages by default. (You may choose to view a different number by following a link on the page itself.)
*'''Hide minor edits in recent changes:''' Logged-in users may choose to mark very small fixes to pages as "minor". You may choose not to see these edits in Recent Changes, though they will be visible when viewing your watchlist.
*'''Enhanced recent changes (JavaScript):''' When selected, this feature allows you to group recent changes per day by article, display the titles of the changed articles in order from new to old latest change, or in the case of hiding minor edits, latest major change. <!-- something missing at the end of that sentence?-->
==Search==
*'''Hits per page:''' You may choose the number of results returned on each page of search results.
*'''Lines per hit:''' Specifying a number n means "do not show any context if the search term occurs beyond line n in the page." Setting this to 5000 or more gives context for every occurrence.
*'''Context per line:''' The number of characters of context per occurrence; however, the context is anyway restricted to the "line" (anything without a line break; usually a paragraph) it occurs in. To get the whole line, choose a large number like 5000.
*'''Search in these namespaces by default:''' Choose which types of pages you would like to appear in searches by default. (You will be able to change these options from the search page.) For example, selecting "Main" only will return only articles, selecting "Main" and "Talk" would search articles and their discussion pages.
==Misc==
*'''Underline links:''' Choose whether you would prefer links to be underlined. "Browser default" underlines links to wiki articles the same way your browser settings are set for other web links.
*'''Format broken links [[this page does not exist|like this]] (alternative: like this[[this page does not exist|?]]):''' Choose whether you would prefer links to pages that do not yet exist to be underlined and in red.colored red or to show as question marks at the end of the word. (Either way, following these links will take you to an "edit" page.)
*'''Justify paragraphs:''' Select if you want article paragraphs formatted to avoid jagged line endings, or "justified".
*'''Auto-number headings:''' This adds hierarchical outline-style numbering to headers in articles.
*'''Show table of contents (for pages with more than 3 headings):''' If selected, automatically shows a box with a table of contents after the first section for pages with more than 3 section headings (for example, this page). This can make it easy to jump to the section you would like, in a long page, and to copy a direct link to that paragraph so that you can reproduce it elsewhere.
*'''Disable page caching:''' This turns off page caching, which is when you see a previously-stored version of a page stored in a cache, rather than the current version. Selecting this is useful if you're experiencing problems with seeing outdated versions of pages, but may cause longer loading times.

==Introduction==
'''[[Special:Userlogin|Creating an account]]''' is free and easy. It also has several other advantages over editing logged-out.
==Anonymity under your chosen user name==
Although those editing logged-out are often called "anons" on wikis, they are actually identified by IP number. This is publicly visible in the "history" page and [[Special:Recentchanges|recent changes]] each time they edit. For many people (for example those using AOL or other large Internet service providers) this doesn't give any information to others. But in some cases, for example if you are editing from a work computer, this may allow others to work out your location or other details. If you are worried about this, you should log in to edit. Your IP address will then not be visible to other contributors.
==A way of joining the community==
Becoming known under a user name means that you will be able to gain reputation and recognition in the community. It's difficult to remember whether or not you have met 88.108.20.19 before! You can also make a personal [[Help:User page|user page]] once you are logged in. The link to your user page will appear at the top right of the screen. You will also have a personal [[Help:Talk page|talk page]], and will be notified with a banner each time someone adds a message. Being able to communicate easily makes it a lot easier to build a wiki.
==New features==
Being logged in allows you to rename pages (with the "move" tab) and to upload images. You can also easily view your contributions using the "my contributions" link at the top of the screen, and make a personal watchlist to keep an eye on your favourite articles.
==Customisation==
A lot of the look of the site can be changed with customisation. Using the "preferences" link, you can change the overall look of the site, your time-zone preferences, search settings, and much more. If you know CSS, then you can change the look of the site even further with your personal style sheet.
So please consider creating an account and logging in. It's free, and very easy. [[Special:Userlogin|Click here]] to go to the log-in page.

All logged-in users have a user page. (For example, if your login name is "MyNick", your user page will have the title "MyNick".) You can find your user page with the link at the top right of every page, or by following [[Special:Mypage|this link]]. Most people use user pages to give information about themselves and their interests and keep links to useful things.
You can make your user page as simple or as complicated as you like. You can add formatting or colour with [[Help:Editing|wiki markup]] or with HTML, or leave it plain and simple. You can also add [[Help:Images|pictures]], either a picture of yourself, one that expresses something about you, or just one you like. Remember though, that all pictures added to {{SITENAME}} must be [[{{SITENAME}}:Copyrights|free-use]].
Remember that all pages on this wiki can be picked up by Google and other search engines, and are available under the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Free_Documentation_License GFDL], so keep that in mind when you write.
==Content==
You may not use your user page for any content that is prohibited on Wikia. This includes copyright violations, pornography, excessive advertising, promotion of illegal activities, and hate speech. See the [[Wikia:Prohibited_content|prohibited content]] page on Central for more detail on this.
Other policies for what you can and can't have on your user page should be by community decision, and will differ on every Wikia. However, most communities allow users to do whatever they would like with their userpages, within Wikia policy.
==Editing user pages==
User pages are still wiki pages, so they are open for everyone to edit. Most people will ask before making major changes to someone else's user page though. Small changes like formatting fixes or spelling corrections are absolutely fine, and can be done freely - it's always nice to find your user page improved.

'''Talk pages''' are for communicating with other Wikians, especially about articles and creating this wiki. There is a talk page attached to every other page; just click the '''"discussion"''' link at the top or side of any page to find it.
Logged in contributors also have a personal talk page. This is found in the same way, by clicking the '''"discussion"''' link at the top or side of a user page. If you have a new message on your talk page, you will see a bright banner accross the top of all other pages. Click the link there to go to your talk page.
There are talk pages for non-logged-in contributors, but these may not always be useful. Because they are linked to IPs, and IPs can change between visits, the messages may not get to the right person. They are used to explain blocks of IPs, but may not be very useful for real communication. This is another good reason to [[Help:Why create an account|create an account]].
Remember that comments on talk pages can be picked up by Google and other search engines, and are available under the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Free_Documentation_License GFDL], so keep that in mind when you write.
It's possible to add a new section to a talk page without opening the whole edit page. Just click the '''"+"''' link next to the edit link. You will be given a space to enter a title for your new section, and to enter your comment. You can then save, and the comment will be added as a new section at the bottom of the page.
If your talk page gets too long, you can create an archive by typing '''<nowiki>[[/Archive]]</nowiki>''' (or any other name you like to use) onto your talk page. You can click the new link, and copy over the older comments.
Some other hints for talk pages:
* Sign your comments by typing '''"<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>"''' (four tildes). This will add your name and the date.
* Add comments to the end of the page.
* Keep your comments polite and friendly. It's always best to be civil, even if things get heated.

All images added to this wiki must be "free-use". That is, they must either by public domain or licensed by the copyright holder under a licence that allows anyone to reuse the images. It's important that we do not add images taken from other websites as these are usually not free-use and would be copyright violations. See [[Help:Image copyright tags]] for more detail on licences and how to tag your images.
==Uploading==
* To upload images you must be logged in.
* Click on '''"Upload file"''' in the toolbox on the left (under the search boxes)
* The '''"Browse"''' button lets you find the image on your hard drive. Click '''"open"''' to select the file.
* If you want to change the file name, you can do so in the '''"Destination filename"''' box.
* Use the '''"Summary"''' box to enter the source of the file and the [[Help:Image copyright tags|image copyright tag]]
* Click '''"Upload"'''.
You will be warned if the name will be changed or if there is already a file with that name. You can then decide whether to go ahead or to abandon the upload.
==Using Images==
<div style="border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; padding:1em; margin: 1em 0;">To use an image in an article, you simply surround the full name (including the "Image" part) in double square brackets:<br/><br/>
'''<nowiki>[[Image:Example.jpg]]</nowiki>''' will give you: [[Image:Example.jpg]]<br clear=all></div>
<div style="border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; padding:1em; margin: 1em 0;">You can resize by adding the size in pixels between two pipes:<br/><br/>
<nowiki>[[Image:Example.jpg</nowiki>'''|50px|''']] will give you: [[Image:Example.jpg|50px|]]<br clear="all"></div>
<div style="border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; padding:1em; margin: 1em 0;">
You can make an image a thumbnail an image by adding "thumb" in the same way. If a pipe is there from a previous variable, you don't need to add another:<br/><br/>
<nowiki>[[Image:Example.jpg|50px</nowiki>'''|thumb|''']] will give you: [[Image:Example.jpg|50px|thumb|]]<br clear="all"></div>
<div style="border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; padding:1em; margin: 1em 0;">This is automatically formatted to the right of the page. You can change this by adding "left" or "center":<br/><br/>
<nowiki>[[Image:Example.jpg|50px|thumb</nowiki>'''|left|''']] will give you: [[Image:Example.jpg|50px|thumb|left|]]<br clear="all"></div>
<div style="border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; padding:1em; margin: 1em 0;">Anything after the last pipe becomes the alt text or the caption:<br/><br/>
<nowiki>[[Image:Example.jpg|50px|thumb|left|</nowiki>'''Alt''']] will give you: [[Image:Example.jpg|50px|thumb|left|Alt]]<br clear="all"></div>
<div style="border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; padding:1em; margin: 1em 0;">To link to a file without showing it on the page, you can use "Media" instead of "Image":<br/><br/>
'''<nowiki>[[Media:Example.jpg]]</nowiki>''' will give you: [[Media:Example.jpg]]<br clear="all"></div>
<div style="border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; padding:1em; margin: 1em 0;">To link to the image page instead, use a colon before the word "Image":<br/><br/>
'''<nowiki>[[:Image:Example.jpg]]</nowiki>''' will give you: [[:Image:Example.jpg]]<br clear="all"></div>
<div style="border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; padding:1em; margin: 1em 0;">Finally, to create a gallery of images you can use the <nowiki><gallery></nowiki> tag:<br/><br/>
'''<gallery><br/>'''
'''Image:Example.jpg|1<br/>'''
'''Image:Example.jpg|2<br/>'''
'''Image:Example.jpg|3<br/>'''
'''</gallery>'''
Will give you:
<gallery>
Image:Example.jpg|1
Image:Example.jpg|2

</gallery><br clear="all"></div>

There are four easy ways to start a new page:
# You can click a red link to the title of the new page from an existing one. For example, to create an article called "This link", you could click [[This link]] (unless someone has created it already on this Wikia). You can also create the link yourself, in a related page or index page. Links on related pages are not only convenient for navigation, but also make people aware of the new page.
# You can also start a new page by typing the URL directly. An easy way to produce the URL is editing the last part of the URL of another page in the same project. (For example, if you are editing on example.wikia.com and you would like to create "This link", go to <nowiki>http://example.wikia.com/wiki/This_link</nowiki>.) To prevent your new page being an "orphan", you should link to it from other pages.
#If you search for a page that is not yet on this wiki, you will see a red link at the top of the search list. Clicking this is another way to get to the edit page for the new article.
#The easest way to create an article is with an inputbox. Typing the new title in the box, and pressing "create article" will take you to the edit page for that article. To see how to add an inputbox, look at the code for the edit box of this page, or see the Central [[Wikia:Help:Inputbox|help page]]
Before using one of those last methods, have a search to see whether there is already a page with a name very like the one you propose. Splitting pages later is easier than merging near-duplicates.

:''This page is based on [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Image copyright tags|Wikipedia:Image copyright tags]]. Please see that page for additional image copyright tags that you may want to use on your wiki.''
All images on Wikia must be free to use under an appropriate license or used under Fair Use. This page will help you figure out which tag to use, and how to tag your images. Most images you find on the web or in a Google image search are '''not''' free to use, even if you don't see any copyright information with them! If you do not know who created an image and what license it is under, you cannot use it.
Please tag images on their image description page (for example [[:Image:Example.jpg|this]] is the description page for Example.jpg) with one of the tags below so we can keep track of its status.
Try to provide as much detail as possible:
* When marking an image as one of the less specific categories (such as CopyrightedFreeUse), try to specify somewhere what the actual license or other permission states.
* If you tag an image as requiring attribution, please specify who needs to be attributed! Note that the GFDL requires attribution.
* If multiple categories apply to an image, add all that apply.
Each tag should be put on a line of its own.
== Tagging options ==
=== Public domain ===
When adding a PD tag, also specify ''why'' the image is PD. Has the author released it into the PD? Is the image old enough to be PD? Is it PD because it was created by a particular government? Is it PD because a user of Wikia created it and has uploaded it as PD? If you will be using a lot of PD images on your wiki, you may want to expand these tags and have more specific information included within them.
* <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:PD|PD]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki>. Public domain. For example, when the author has put the work into the public domain or the author died over 70 years ago (pre-1935).
===Free licenses===
Be specific about which version of the license the image is used under.
* <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:Attribution|Attribution]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki> - For images that require attribution.
* <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:CopyrightedFreeUse|CopyrightedFreeUse]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki> - The image is copyrighted, but is free to use for any purpose. (This includes commercial use and derivative works: please be careful that the copyright holder didn't mean "personal use" only!)
*<nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:CopyrightedFreeUseProvidedThat|CopyrightedFreeUseProvidedThat]]<nowiki>|...}}</nowiki> - Eg. provided that credit is given and copyright is attributed. Note that non-commercial or educational use restrictions are not allowed as provisions in this tag.
* <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:GFDL|GFDL]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki> - [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Free_Documentation_License GNU Free Documentation License]
* <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:GPL|GPL]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki> - GNU General Public License
* <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:cc-by|cc-by]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki> - Creative Commons Attribution
* <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:cc-sa|cc-sa]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki> - Creative Commons ShareAlike
* <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:cc-by-sa|cc-by-sa]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki> - Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike
===Fair use===
See [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Image copyright tags|Wikipedia]] for a wider selection of fair use tags, especially if you will be uploading many logos or album covers. Review [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Image description page#Fair use rationale]].
* <nowiki>{{</nowiki>[[Template:Fairuse|Fairuse]]<nowiki>}}</nowiki> - for a copyrighted image which is contended to be [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Fair use|fair use]].
===Unsuitable===
If you do not know the copyright status, do not upload the image! Non-free Creative Commons licenses are also not permitted. This includes images which do not allow non-commercial use or derivative works (NC and ND licenses), since these are non-[[Wikia:free content|free]]. The Sampling+ license is also not free.
Wikipedia has a range of tags explaining why an image is unsuitable. For Wikia with complex deletion procedures, you may want to consider adding such tags for the period of deletion discussion. For other wikis, you may find it more appropriate to delete the image, or tag it specifically with a <nowiki>{{delete}}</nowiki> template.
Examples of such tags on Wikipedia include [[Wikipedia:Template:unverified|unverified]], [[Wikipedia:Template:unknown|unknown]], and [[Wikipedia:Template:copyrighted|copyrighted]].
== Rationale ==
# What's "fair use" in one country may not be "fair use" in another country; this allows people creating derivative works in other countries to extract images which aren't legal in their country.
# It is harder to create decent images than decent text, so the temptation to break copyright is bigger, so we like to be a bit more vigilant. For this very reason, sublicensees of Wikia are going to be especially concerned about images, particularly for printed versions.
# Secondly, it's easy to rewrite text that turns out to be copyrighted, but harder (though possible) to do the same for images.
# It is good practice to cite our sources, where we've (legally) copied images from elsewhere. If we give due credit, we're more likely to get permission (and some licenses require due credit anyway).
# Where Wikians have created the images, they should have a bit of fame! Putting some text on the image description page that they took it themselves, and they license it under the GFDL, is a good way to do that.
==Creating new tags or sub-categories==
Try to use the tags already available at Wikipedia. This makes it easier for people who want to re-use content from both sites.
# First create the template, for example, '''Template:Asdf'''. This can be a quick draft version of a public domain notice, for example.
# Categorize that template to '''Category:Asdf images'''.
# Edit this category to put a description.
# Add the template tag '''<nowiki>{{Image template notice|Asdf}}</nowiki>''' in this category edit.
# Categorize this category to, for example, '''Category:Public domain images'''.
Done.
All you need to do is just tag your uploaded images with '''<nowiki>{{Asdf}}</nowiki>'''.
All those images will be in the '''Category:Asdf images''' which in turn would be a sub-category of '''Category:Public domain images'''.
== Categories ==
Each copyright tag such as '''<nowiki>{{Fairuse}}</nowiki>''' should correspond to a category. Placing such a tag on an image will automatically put it into that category, because that template should already belong to that category.

[[Project:Administrators|Administrators]] can '''protect''' and unprotect pages. Protection of a page or image means that a non-admin cannot modify it.
The majority of pages on all Wikia should remain publicly editable, and '''not protected'''. Pages may, however, be temporarily or permanently protected for legal reasons (for example, license texts should not be changed) or in cases of extreme vandalism or edit warring.
==Uses==
*Protecting highly vandalised pages, such as the [[Main Page]] on large wikis.
*Maintaining the integrity of the site's logo and favicon.
*Maintaining the integrity of key [[Project:copyrights|copyright]] and license pages.
*Protecting the interface and system messages in the MediaWiki namespace (these are protected automatically)
A '''temporary''' protection is used for:
*Enforcing a "cool down" period to stop an "edit war", upon request.
*Protecting a page or image that has been a recent target of ''persistent'' vandalism or ''persistent'' edits by a banned user.
There is no need to protect personal .css and .js pages like user/monobook.css or user/cologneblue.js. Only the accounts associated with these pages (and admins) are able to edit them. (For more information on using these pages, see the [[Wikia:Help:User style|help page on Central]]
==Rules==
#Do not make the common mistake of protecting pages unnecessarily. For example, do not protect a page simply because it is the Main Page.
#Do not [[Help:Editing|edit]] a temporarily protected page except to add a notice explaining the page is protected.
#Do not protect a page you are involved in an edit dispute over. Admin powers are not editor privileges - admins should only act as servants to the user community at large.
#Avoid favoring one version of the article over another, unless one version is vandalism.
#Temporarily protected pages should not be left protected for very long.
#Talk pages and user talk pages are not protected except in extreme circumstances.
#The protection of a page on any particular version is not meant to express support for that version and requests should therefore not be made that the protected version be reverted to a different one.

==Introduction==
Different users have access to different functions of the site. While anyone can do most things on the site, including reading and editing, '''administrators''' can access a few additional functions:
* Deleting and undeleting pages, page histories, and uploaded files.
* Locking ([[project:Protected page|protecting]]) a page so it cannot be edited or renamed by users without admin rights.
* Blocking IP addresses or user names from editing; and very quick "rollback" of undesirable edits.
* Editing the interface by changing system messages and skins.
A '''bureaucrat''' can make other users into bureaucrats or administrators on their own wiki. He or she is not currently able to remove admin access from any user; please contact one of the community staff if you need that done.
Some Wikia staff members have full access to all Wikia. They will be shown in [[Special:Listusers/staff]] on any wiki. Please see the Central Wikia [[Wikia:Contact us|contact page]] for details on how to contact Wikia staff.
== Who are this wiki's administrators? ==
The "founder" of a wiki, the person who first requested it, is given administrator access automatically. Founders are also given bureaucrat access so they can make any other user on their wiki an administrator or bureaucrat. For a complete list of users with administrator access, see [[Special:Listusers/sysop]].
You may also wish to list them on this page.
*[[User:Example]]
== How do I use administrator powers? ==
See the [[Help:Administrators' how-to guide|administrators' how-to guide]] for a guide on using admin functions.
== Becoming an administrator ==
For you to become an administrator, someone with bureaucrat access must make you one. On larger Wikia, there will usually be a community page for requests, with a page name such as "[[{{ns:project}}:Requests for adminship]]". On a smaller wiki, you may simply ask on the community portal or [[Forum:Index|Forum]], or ask a bureaucrat directly on his or her talk page.
If there are no active bureaucrats and you wish to become an administrator, please contact the [[Wikia:Community Team|community staff on the Central Wikia.]]
== What can administrators not do? ==
Administrators should not use their administrator powers to settle editing disputes; for example, to lock a page on a version he or she prefers in an editing dispute that isn't vandalism. Administrator powers should be use to help keep the wiki clear of vandalism, spam, and users who make malicious edits, but not for simple disagreements between users acting in good faith. Ideally an admin shouldn't be considered "in charge". The ideal admin is just someone who is trusted to have a few extra buttons and to use them for the benefit of the Wikia community.

Every founder of a Wikia has [[Project:administrators|administrator]] access on the wiki they founded. Other users may also be granted this access, by the founder, or by another bureaucrat. This page is a basic how-to '''guide to using your admin powers'''. This page explains how to carry out sysop actions, and does not cover the policies that you must follow before doing these. Ensure you are aware of the relevant policies on your wiki before doing anything described on this page.
==Deleting a page==
#Click the ''delete'' or ''delete this page'' link on the page you want to delete. (If you are using the monobook skin with English as your default language, you can use the shortcut alt+d.)
#You will be shown a page with a box to type in the reason for deletion, and a confirm box. This page will give you a warning if the page has more than one revision in its history. If something looks like nonsense but has a page history, check the history before deleting it! The revision you are looking at could be just a vandalised version of a real article.
#Type your reason for deletion in the box provided. If it is a very short page, the box will contain the page text. For pages that are obviously vandalism, you may wish to leave the full text as the reason. In other cases, you should specify why you are deleting it. (For example, "this page is not about the subject of this wiki" or "this page is a copyright violation".)
#After you have deleted the page, check to see if it has a talk page. If it does, delete this too.
#If the page is being deleted because it should not exist, check that nothing links to it to prevent it being created again.
#Follow any other guidelines for deleting page on your wiki, which may include archiving a deletion discussion.
==Deleting an image==
#Check that you really want to delete the image! Image deletion is not reversible, so please be careful when doing this.
#Click on the image to be deleted, or follow the image link (for example, [[:Image:Example.jpg]]), which will take you to the image's description page.
#To delete all revisions of an image, click "delete all revisions of this image" where it appears in the image history. You may also click "delete" at the top of the page the same way you might for an article.
#To delete an older revision of an image, you must click the ''del'' link which appears next to that revision of the image.
#:If there is more than one revision of an image, clicking the "Delete all revisions of this image" will do exactly that. You can not delete the most recent one without deleting all older copies as well, and also deleting the image description page. If you would like to delete only the most recent revision, you must revert to an earlier revision first.
#After clicking ''Delete all revisions of this image'', you will see a confirmation screen similar to that used for page deletion. The deletion will be logged at [[Special:Log/delete]]. Again, remember image deletion is not reversible!
#If the image has a talk page, delete this too.
==Undeleting a page==
Pages can be undeleted for as long as they are in the archive. This archive is occasionally cleared out.
#To restore a page that has not been recreated, look for a message on the page telling you how many deleted revisions there are. To restore a page that has been recreated, this message will appear when you view the page history. (You can also type the full URL to undelete; for example, http://www.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:Undelete&target=Foo to undelete [[Foo]].)
#Click on this to go to a page which displays the deleted revisions. You can look at each revision separately, and choose whether to undelete ''all'' revisions (the default) or selected ones.
#To undelete all revisions, click the ''restore'' button which appears on the confirmation page. (Undeletion occurs as soon as you click this; there is no further confirmation screen or a place to type a reason.)
#To undelete only selected revisions, select the revisions you wish restore with the checkboxes next to each revision, and then click the ''restore'' button. If you do not undelete all revisions, the log will record how many you did restore.
#To view a deleted page without undeleting it, click on the timestamp of the version you wish to see. This will allow you to view that version of the page without restoring it.
==Protecting or unprotecting a page or image==
Pages may be protected from editing by anyone other than administrators. Please check to see that you are following the wiki's policies! It is a common mistake to protect pages unnecessarily; remember that protection should only be used to stop vandalism or edit wars. Main pages do not need to be protected unless they are consistently targets of vandalism.
#Click the ''protect'' or ''protect this page'' link. It is a common mistake to protect pages unnecessarily. (If you are using the monobook skin, you can use the shortcut alt+=.)
#:If you are protecting an image, click "protect" on the image description page. When an image is protected, both the page and the image are protected. The image description page will be protected, and non-sysops will not be able to revert the image to an earlier version, or upload a new version over it.
#You will see a confirmation screen. Enter the reason for protection in the box, check the ''confirm'' box and press confirm. This will be logged at [[Special:Log/protect]]. (Please check this log occasionally to see if there are any pages where protection should be lifted, as it does not expire automatically.)
#If your wiki has a template that marks the page as protected, place this template on the page. (If your wiki does not have one, consider making one! This is helpful for new editors who may not understand what is happening or how to request that a protected page be changed.)
Unprotection is done in exactly the same way.
==Editing a protected page==
Click ''edit this page'' in the normal way. The only difference is the warning at the top of the page reminding you the page is protected. Please check whether your wiki has a protection policy before doing this; it is discouraged to leave a page locked to administrator editing only unless there is a strong reason for it.
==Block a user or IP==
Please check whether your wiki has a policy on this! Remember that blocks should only be used to prevent damage to the wiki, and should be used as a last resort.
#Click the ''block'' link that appears next to the IP or username in recent changes or go to [[Special:Blockip]].
#If you went directly to [[Special:Blockip]], fill in the name or IP of the user you want to block in the first field.
#:To block a range of IPs, enter the range in this field instead. If you do not know how to do this, please read [[m:Range blocks]]. If you need help right away because of high-speed vandalism attacks, contact a staff member for assistance.
#Fill in the length of the block in the second either from the dropdown menu or, if you select "other", for some other appropriate length according to your wiki's blocking policy. Do not block shared or dynamic IP addresses for a long time, because the user you wished to block will not be using it for long, but other innocent users may.
#Add the reason for the block in the third field. This reason should explain to the user why they are blocked according your wiki's blocking policy. Remember that other users may be innocently affected by the block and will see this message, so do not put anything offensive, confusing or vague as the reason.
#Click the ''block this user'' button. This will be logged at [[Special:Log/block]] and the user will appear in the [[Special:Ipblocklist|list of blocked IP addresses and usernames]] until the block expires.
==Unblock a user, IP or range==
#Go to [[Special:Ipblocklist]] and find the user you want to unblock.
#:If you want to undo an ''autoblock'' on a user with the same IP address as a blocked user, you will need to know the number assigned to the block, which will show up in the block message when the user tries to edit. You do not need to know the user's IP address, but simply unblocking the username will not lift the block.
#Click the ''unblock'' link next to the user, IP, or range you wish to unblock. If a range is blocked, you need to unblock the whole range. It isn't possible to unblock a specific IP from that range.
#Fill in the reason for the unblock on the confirmation page. This will be logged at [[Special:Log/block]] and the user will be immediately unblocked.
==Using sysop revert==
Any user can remove vandalism from a page, but administrators have a ''rollback'' button to make this easier. To revert the edits of one user to the last version by the previous author:
#Click ''rollback'' on the page history, the user contribution list, or on the diff page. Your revert will be marked as a "minor edit" and given the automatic edit summary ''Reverted edits by X to last version by Y''.
#In cases of large scale vandalism that flood recent changes, you may use "bot rollback". Add <tt>&bot=1</tt> to the end of the URL used to access a user's contributions. For example, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target=Vandal&bot=1. When the rollback links on the contributions list are clicked, the revert as well as the original edit that you are reverting will both be hidden from the default Recentchanges display.
==Merging page histories==
Merging page histories is a means of fixing cut and paste moves where the histories do not overlap. This action is not reversible, so please do not attempt it unless you understand the procedure.
#Decide which title the merged article should have. For example, take two pages, "Bird Seed" and "Birdseed". In our example, say it's "Birdseed". Delete the article currently at this title. (You should provide as the reason for deletion "merging page history" or something similar.)
#Move the other page to that new title. (So, move "Bird Seed" to "birdseed".)
#Delete the page. ("Birdseed"—which had the content you moved from "Bird Seed".)
#Undelete the page. The deleted revisions from ''both'' pages will now be available to restore.
==Editing the interface==
Admins can change the wording of the user interface messages by editing the automatically-protected pages in the MediaWiki namespace. You can see a list of these messages at [[Special:Allmessages]] You can also, change the design of the interface, or "skin", at [[MediaWiki:Monobook.css]].
Please note that changing some pages, such as [[MediaWiki:monobook.css]] and [[MediaWiki:monobook.js]] may make the site unusable without help restoring it; please be careful in implementing changes if you are not sure what you are doing.

==GNU Free Documentation License==
The '''GNU Free Documentation License''' ('''GFDL''') is a copyleft license for free content, designed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF).
The GFDL is a "copyleft" license, meaning the content can be copied, modified, and redistributed so long as the new version grants the same freedoms to others and acknowledges the authors of the Wikia page. Wikia content will, therefore, will remain free forever and can be used by anybody subject to certain restrictions, most of which serve to ensure that freedom.
Wikipedia, one of the web's most popular reference works, uses the GFDL. Using the same license as that site makes it easy for Wikia users to reuse the content from Wikipedia. You must adhere to the GFDL when using Wikipedia content.
==Image guidelines==
GFDL or public domain images are strongly preferred on Wikia. Copyright-violating images are subject to deletion. Copyright information must be added to the image description page of every uploaded image. Images and other uploaded files may be available under an alternative free license, or used under fair use guidelines.

<big><big><center>'''Welcome to Wikia!'''</center></big></big>
----
Everything is ready here for you to add content. There are some basic help and guideline pages to start off your community, and a basic main page as the entry point to this Wikia. You can start adding pages now!
Here are some things you might want to start with to improve this Wikia.
__TOC__
==Add a custom logo==
The default "this wiki does not yet have a logo" message can be changed by uploading a logo to this Wikia. The image must be in .png format, and should be no more than 135 pixels wide and 155 pixels high. Upload the file with the "destination filename" '''wiki.png''', and it will appear on all pages.
If you would like help designing or creating a logo, please [[Special:Contact|contact us]] -- we'd be happy to help!
==Add a custom favicon==
Although it's a small thing (just 16 by 16 pixels) a custom favicon -- the tiny logo which appears in your browser's address bar and on your bookmarks -- can help give a consistent theme to the wiki. Just upload a 16 by 16 pixel image with the "destination filename" '''favicon.ico'''. It may take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours for the icon to appear.
There are many [http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=favicon+creator favicon creation tools] on the web which you can use to design one from scratch, or convert a larger image into a favicon.
==Improve your front page==
Your basic front page is ready to use. You can improve it by adding content about this Wikia. Consider what visitors will want to see first. What are the starting points for anyone reading about your subject? Where should editors start and what are the most important things for them to work on? You may also want to include links to the help files.
== Find and keep new editors ==
Invite your friends to help you edit. Communities you already belong to about the topic of your Wikia are a good place to ask for people to come join you. Be careful not to spam, though! Think of the types of messages you would like to read and the types of messages you delete.
Keep an eye on [[Special:Recentchanges|Recentchanges]], and when you see someone new edit the wiki, add a nice welcome message to their [[help:Talk page|Talk page]] as soon as you can! Wikis work when there is a community of people editing; try to keep in contact with the other people who show up to edit, as it will encourage them to stick around.
If you have many newcomers you can use a template to welcome them. We've provided a nice basic one at [[Template:Welcome]] to get you started, but we encourage you to customize the text and links, and change the picture to one that is important (or funny!) to your community. Friendliness and humor can go a long way in making new visitors feel welcome.
==Add content!==
Although this is a wiki, your first visitors are not likely to want to jump right in. They need some idea of what your wiki is about first. "Seeding" content is vital to get people interested and to show them what sort of content you want.
You may need to add many articles before people start to join in and add with you -- don't get discouraged. The more content you add, the sooner search engines and real people will find your site useful, and the quicker your small community will start to grow.
==Ask for help==
The Wikia staff are here to help you succeed with this wiki. If you have problems at any time, are not sure how to make the changes you want to your wiki, or want help customizing your site, then please ask us.
You can email using the form at [[Special:Contact]], you can write to us on our Central user pages, or you can click the "live chat and support" link on the left of any page to go to the Wikia IRC channel (also at [irc://irc.freenode.net/wikia irc://irc.freenode.net/wikia]). For a list of Wikia staff, see [[Wikia:Wikia, Inc.|the Wikia Inc. page on Central]].

This is our top-level category. (Looking at it another way, it is our root category!)
Ideally, every other category should be a subcategory of at least one other, and every article should be in at least one category; many will fit well into two (eg location and subject-matter). A full list of existing categories can be found at [[Special:Categories]].
To add a new category, just add <nowiki>[[category:categoryname]]</nowiki> to the article or existing category page (after checking whether any existing category is suitable).

This category is intended to contain all the "help" pages for this Wikia: pages that can help contributors and/or readers. Most, but not all, have "Help:" at the beginning of their page names and are therefore in the "Help" namespace; an automatically-generated list of those can be found at [[Special:Allpages]] by running down the "Namespace" menu. Many wikis also make much use of a [[Help:Contents]] page, where headings and tables may be used to cover the main areas, in contrast to a [[Special:Categories|category]], which is fairly rigidly based on alphabetical order.
If you find helpful pages that you think should be here, you may include them here just by typing <nowiki>[[category:help]]</nowiki> on them.
You can also:
* ask questions at the [[Forum:Index|forum]]
* talk to one of the [[Special:Listadmins|site administrators]] or any currently active contributor (the people whose names appear on [[Special:Recentchanges|the "Recent changes" page]]); use their User Talk pages.
If you can't find what you need on this wiki, you can seek help at the [[Wikia:Wikia|Central Wikia]]. There are more help pages at [[Wikia:Category:Help]], and you can use the [[Wikia:Forum:Index|Central forum]].
If you still need help, you may want to contact the [[Wikia:Community Team|Wikia Community Team]].

Wikia's forums are adapted wiki pages that are automatically organised with index pages. Using a forum is simple. Each forum has an input box that allows you to type a title for a new page and press a button to create it. The page is loaded with a template, which ensures that the page has the correct category for indexing. It's important not to delete this template when you write your message.
Once the page is saved, it will show in a list of all pages in that forum. Other contributors can then add to the page in the same way as to other wiki pages. Pages with new messages are shown in the list as bold and with an [[Image:Forum new.gif]] icon. You can also view recent changes for the forum by clicking the link above the forum list.
==Adding new forums==
===Step 1===
A new forum can be added by editing [[Forum:Index]]. This isn't necessary to make the forums work, as the two default forums are ready to use, but it can be useful in an active community.
To add a forum, the following code (copied from this page, not from the source) should be added to '''Forum:Index''' on your Wikia, after the previous <nowiki></forum></nowiki> tag if there are any.
<nowiki><forum>
namespace=Forum
category=</nowiki><span style="color:red">Name of forum</span><nowiki>
title=</nowiki><span style="color:red">Name of forum</span><nowiki>
shownamespace=false
addlasteditor=true
</forum></nowiki>
The only part of this code that needs editing is the "Name of forum" after "category" and "title". This can be set as anything you choose, and will show in the index and in the navigation links at the top of each page.
===Step 2===
Once this is saved, there will be a link to the new forum page. This can then be edited to add the following:
<nowiki><div class="forumheader">'''Forums:''' [[Forum:Index|Index]] > {{PAGENAME}}</div><br />
[{{SERVER}}{{localurl:Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:{{PAGENAME}}}} View recent changes for this forum]
----
<table width="100%"><tr><td><!-- You could create (or transclude) a forum header here --></td><td width="50%"><inputbox>
type=create
break=no
prefix=Forum:
preload=Template:Forumheader/</nowiki><span style="color:red"><nowiki>{{PAGENAME}}</nowiki></span><nowiki>
buttonlabel=Add new topic
</inputbox></td></tr></table>
<table class="forumlist" width="100%"><tr><th class="forum_title" align="left">Topic</th>
<th class="forum_edited" align="left">Last Edit</th>
<th class="forum_editor" align="left">Last Author</th></tr>
<forum>
namespace=Forum
category={{PAGENAME}}
shownamespace=false
addlasteditor=true
</forum></table>
[[Category:Forums]]</nowiki>
Nothing usually needs changing in this text. ''However, there is sometimes an issue with <nowiki>{{PAGENAME}}</nowiki> in the preload= section (hilighted in red). If you find the template not preloading, change this to the name of the template specifically. So if the Forum name is Forum:Gossip, create the preload template as Template:Forumheader/Gossip and change the preload line to '''preload=Template:Forumheader/Gossip'''.''
===Step 3===
The last thing to do is to set up a template to be loaded when someone adds a page to the new forum. This should be at "Template:Forumheader/Name of forum", changing the name to the same forum name you used in the index. This should contain the following:
<nowiki>{{Forumheader|</nowiki><span style="color:red">Name of forum</span><nowiki>}}
<!-- Please put your content under this line. Be sure to sign your edits with four tildes ~~~~ --></nowiki>
Again, "Name of forum" needs to be changed to the new forum's name. Once this is saved, the forum is complete.
As with many elements of Wikia, many aspects of this can be changed. The layout, the template style, the items shown in the index, the new messages icon.... you could, for example, have an image appear automatically at the top of each page added, or have new messages show in red text. It's also possible to use the same code as above to make subforums such as "Forum:Help/technical". For this, the first code should be put into the parent forum page instead of the index. The inputbox forms can also have an instructional template above with the editintro parameter (See [[m:Inputbox]] for info).

The Wikia search searches this wiki, and also gives you five results from other wikis hosted by Wikia.
[http://www.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:Search&what=prefs WikiaSearch preferences] are not part of the main [[Special:Preferences]] page. In your preferences, you can set whether you want text matches and title matches to be separate, and how many results display per page. You must be [[Special:Userlogin|logged in]] to change your preferences.
The first page of results will show 5 hits from this wiki, and 5 hits from other wikis. If more results on this wiki are available, you can click the ''More pages on this wiki »'' link to view 10 more (or up to 50 more if you change your [http://www.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:Search&what=prefs WikiaSearch preferences]).
The results from other wikis will only include pages in the main (article) namespace.
If no matches are found, an alternative spelling might be suggested.

There are very few policies which apply across all Wikia. These can be found on the Central Wikia at [[Wikia:Category:Policy]].
Other policies for this Wikia will be decided by the wiki community. It's generally best to keep policies as simple as possible, and not to introduce too many rules. A growing wiki can usually do well with a few simple policies and a lot of good will and cooperation.
Adding <nowiki>[[Category:Policy]]</nowiki> to any policy pages will add them to the policy category. This is found [[:Category:Policy|here]].

<!--COMMENT Please do not make any changes above this line.
Feel free to make any changes below.
This is the sandbox where you can play and try out wiki editing safely. -->
This page is for any tests.
Welcome to the sandbox!
Anyone can edit this.
==Simple Editing==
To edit a page, click on the "edit" tab, usually near the top of the page. Then, edit the box in the page. Feel free to practice here, on this page. It's here just for you to practice.
A blank line indicates a paragraph separation.
You can link to another page by putting the name or title of that page in double square brackets.
<nowiki>[[Main Page]]</nowiki> becomes [[Main Page]].
==Simple Formatting==
Create headers by putting text inbetween repeated equal (=) signs. The more =, the lower level the heading is.
Create a bulleted list by starting each item with an asterick (*)
* it's ok to make editing mistakes
* you can preview your work before saving it
* even after saving it, you or someone else can edit it again to make it even better
==Formatting for Emphasis==
Put single quote marks around words or phrases for formatting emphasis.
Two single quotes, like <nowiki>''italics''</nowiki> will create ''italics''.
Three single quotes, like <nowiki>'''bold text'''</nowiki> will create '''bold text'''.
----
Other stuff...
If you know HTML or CSS formatting commands, they can also be used in this wiki. One useful HTML command is <nowiki><br></nowiki> which creates a line break.
If you want to show what a command looks like, rather than actually implementing the command, surround it with the '''nowiki''' command.

==Absolute beginners?==
'''If you can type and click, you can edit most pages on this wiki.'''
#'''Find a page to improve'''. (''If you want, you can practice in the [[project:Sandbox|Sandbox]] first. It's there for "practicing", or experimenting with almost anything. It's a good place to get used to how the wiki works.'')
#'''Click "Edit this page"'''.
#An "edit box" will open - '''type''' your new sentences or corrections (just like MS or Lotus or WordPerfect wordprocessing)
#'''Click the "Save" button''' - (well, it may be wise to hit the "Preview" button first, in case of mistakes!)
#'''You're now a Web Publisher. Welcome to the team!'''
==More detail==
As with all wikis, you can edit any non-[[Project:Protected page|protected page]] on this Wikia. Your changes will be visible immediately. Just click the "'''edit'''" link that appears near the top of every page.
Explain your edit in the "Summary" box between the edit window and the save and preview buttons. eg: "typo" or "added info on xyz".
Use the "Show preview" button to check your edit and get the formatting right before saving. Remember to '''Save page''' before moving on.
If you are logged in, you can mark an edit as minor by checking the ''This is a minor edit'' box to let people know your edit is not something substantive.
To try editing, open a new window and go to the [[PROJECT:Sandbox|Sandbox]] (which is an editing test area), and then click the "'''edit'''" link. Add something and click save.
==Formatting==
Most text formatting is usually done with wiki markup, so you don't have to learn HTML.
===Bold and italics===
'''Bold''' and ''italics'' are added by surrounding a word or phrase with multiple apostrophes ('):
*<tt><nowiki>''italics''</nowiki></tt> is rendered as ''italics''. (2 apostrophes on each side)
*<tt><nowiki>'''bold'''</nowiki></tt> is rendered as '''bold'''. (3 apostrophes on each side)
*<tt><nowiki>'''''bolded italics'''''</nowiki></tt> is rendered as '''''bolded italics'''''. (2 + 3 = 5 apostrophes on each side)
===Headings and subheadings===
Headings and subheadings are an easy way to improve the organization of an article. If you can see two or more distinct topics being discussed, you can break up your article by inserting a heading for each section.
Headings can be created like this:
*<tt><nowiki>==Main heading==</nowiki></tt> (2 equals signs) <!-- it's not the "top" level -->
*<tt><nowiki>===Subheading===</nowiki></tt> (3 equals signs)
*<tt><nowiki>====Another level down====</nowiki></tt> (4 equals signs)
*<tt><nowiki>=====Another level down=====</nowiki></tt> (5 equals signs)
If an article has at least three headings, a table of contents (TOC) will be automatically generated. Try creating some headings in the [[PROJECT:Sandbox|Sandbox]] and see the effect on the TOC.
===Indenting===
To indent text, place a colon (<tt>:</tt>) right at the beginning of a line. The more colons you put, the further indented the text will be. A newline (pressing '''Enter''' or '''Return''') marks the end of the indented paragraph.
For example:
<br><tt>This is aligned all the way to the left.</tt>
:<tt><nowiki>:</nowiki>This is indented slightly.</tt>
:<tt><nowiki>::</nowiki>This is indented more.</tt>
is shown as:
<br>This is aligned all the way to the left.
:This is indented slightly.
::This is indented more.
===Bullet points===
To insert a bullet, use an asterisk (<tt>*</tt>). Similar to rectal indentation, more asterisks in front of a paragraph means more indentation.
A brief example:
:<tt><nowiki>*</nowiki>First list item</tt>
:<tt><nowiki>*</nowiki>Second list item</tt>
:<tt><nowiki>**</nowiki>Sub-list item under second</tt>
:<tt><nowiki>*</nowiki>Isn't this fun?</tt>
Which is shown as:
:*First list item
:*Second list item
:**Sub-list item under second
:*Isn't this fun?
===Numbered lists===
You can also create numbered lists. For this, use the number sign or hash symbol (<tt>#</tt>). Using more <tt>#</tt>s will affect the level of indenting.
Example:
:<tt><nowiki>#</nowiki>First item</tt>
:<tt><nowiki>#</nowiki>Second item</tt>
:<tt><nowiki>##</nowiki>Sub-item under second item</tt>
:<tt><nowiki>#</nowiki>Third item</tt>
Shows up as:
:#First item
:#Second item
:##Sub-item under second item
:#Third item
==Links==
Links are important on wikis to help readers navigate your site.
===Internal links===
You can extensively cross-reference wiki pages using internal links. You can add links to existing titles, and also to titles you think ought to exist in future.
To make a link to another page on the same wiki, just put the title in double square brackets.
For example, if you want to make a link to, say, the ''Main Page'', it would be:
:<tt><nowiki>[[Main Page]]</nowiki></tt>
If you want to use words other than the article title as the text of the link, you can add an alternative name by adding it after a pipe "|" divider (SHIFT + BACKSLASH on English-layout and other keyboards).
For example, if you wanted to make a link to the [[Main Page]], but wanted it to say "home page" you would write it as such:
:<tt>View the <nowiki>[[Main Page|home page]]</nowiki>...</tt>
It would appear as:
:View the [[Main Page|home page]]...
When you want to use the plural of an article title (or add any other suffix) for your link, you can add the extra letters directly outside the double square brackets.
For example, you would write:
:<tt>Add questions to the Wikia for <nowiki>[[quiz]]zes</nowiki>.</tt>
It would appear as:
:Add questions to the Wikia for [[quiz]]zes. (the link will be red if this page does not yet exist)
===Interwiki links===
To link to another Wikia, you can use its title followed by a colon and the article name, instead of using the full URL.
For example, the Creatures Wiki home page is at [[Creatures:Main Page]], which can be typed as
:<nowiki>[[Creatures:Main Page]]</nowiki>
:rather than as <nowiki>http://creatures.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page</nowiki>
This style of link works for any wiki in the interwiki map, not just for Wikia. See the Central Wikia page at [[Wikia:Help:Interwiki link]].
===External links===
If you want to link to a site outside of Wikia, you may just type the full URL for the page you want to link to.
:http://www.google.com/
It is often more useful to make the link display something other than the URL, so use '''one''' square bracket at each end, with the alternative title after the full URL address, separated by a '''space''' (''not'' a pipe). So if you want the link to appear as [http://www.google.com/ Google search engine], just type:
:<tt><nowiki>[http://www.google.com/ Google search engine]</nowiki></tt>
===Redirects===
To redirect automatically from one page to another, type <nowiki>#REDIRECT</nowiki> and then put in brackets the name of the page to be redirected to.
For example, you could redirect from "Cats" to "Cat". That way, anyone typing either version in the search box will automatically go to "Cat".
==Wiki variables and templates==
Use <nowiki>{{SITENAME}}</nowiki> to see the current Wikia. For instance, '''''<nowiki>{{SITENAME}}</nowiki>''''' on this site prints out as '''''{{SITENAME}}'''''.
That and a few other templates are common to MediaWiki sites.
Check the [{{SERVER}}/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=10 current list of all templates on this Wikia].
You can create templates. After you create the page Template:XXX, using the command <nowiki>{{XXX}} </nowiki> will include that content in your current page. So, if you have something that needs to be included on many other pages, you might want to use a template.
Most templates available on the Central Wikia can be used on individual wikia with just "wikia:" prefixed to the name. See the help page on Central at [[Wikia:Help:Shared templates]].

[[Wikipedia:Wikipedia|Wikipedia]], the free encyclopedia, is the largest and most successful wiki. This page lists some of the overarching guidelines that have helped make Wikipedia a success. You may like to consider them for this Wikia.
# '''BE BOLD!''' in updating pages. Go ahead, it's a wiki! <br />Encourage others, including those who disagree with you, likewise to '''BE BOLD!'''
# '''Be civil''' to other users at all times.
# '''Ignore all rules'''. If the rules discourage you from improving or maintaining the wiki's quality, ignore them.
# '''When in doubt, take it to the [[Help:Talk page|talk page]]'''. We have all the time in the world. Mutual respect is the guiding behavioural principle of Wikia and, although everyone knows that their writing may be edited mercilessly, it is easier to accept changes if the reasons for them are understood. If you discuss changes on the article's ''talk'' (or ''discussion'') page before you make them, you should reach consensus faster and happier.
#'''[[Project:Copyrights|Respect copyright]]'''. Wikia uses the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Free_Documentation_License GNU Free Documentation License]. Everything you contribute must be compatible with that license.
# '''Decent edit summaries''' and clear and transparent explanations are universally appreciated. Other editors need to understand your process, and it also helps you yourself to understand what you did after a long leave of absence from an article. Please state '''''what''''' you changed and '''''why'''''. If the explanation is too long, add more on the discussion page.
#'''Assume good faith'''; in other words, try to consider the person on the other end of the discussion is a thinking, rational being who is trying to positively contribute to the project — unless, and only unless, you have firm, solid, and objective proof to the contrary. Merely disagreeing with you is no such proof.
#Particularly, '''don't revert good faith edits'''. [[Help:Reverting|Reverting]] is a little ''too'' powerful sometimes. Don't succumb to the temptation, unless you're reverting very obvious vandalism <small>(like "LALALALAL*&*@#@THIS_SUX0RZ", or someone changing "1+2=3" to "1+2='''17'''")</small>. If you really can't stand something, revert once, with an edit summary something like "(rv) I disagree strongly, I'll explain why in talk." and immediately take it to talk.
# '''No personal attacks'''. Don't write that user such and so is an idiot, or insult him/her (even if (s)he ''is'' an idiot). Instead, explain what they did wrong, why it is wrong, and how to fix it. If possible, fix it yourself (but see above).
# '''Be graceful''': ''Be liberal in what you accept, be conservative in what you do''. Try to accommodate other people's quirks the best you can, but try to be as polite, solid and straightforward as possible yourself.
# '''Sign your posts on talk pages''' using <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> which gets replaced by your username and timestamp when you hit submit. But don't sign on mainspace articles.
# '''Use the preview button'''; it prevents edit conflicts.
It's important to have fun... but try to make sure those around you have fun too!

To '''revert''' is to undo all changes made after a certain time in the past. The result will be that the page becomes identical to how it used to be at some previous time. A '''partial revert''' undoes only some of those changes.
To '''revert''' a page to an earlier version:
* Go to the page you wish to revert, click on the ''History'' tab at the top of the page, then click on the '''time and date''' of the earlier version you want to revert to. It will not work if you click on 'cur', 'last', or "Compare selected versions".
* When the page displays, text similar to this: ''(Revision as of 23:19 Jul 15, 2003)'', will display. It appears below the page's title, in place of the ''From {project name}'', usually seen.
* Verify that you've selected the correct version, then click a link to edit the page as you would normally.
* You'll get a warning, above the edit box, about editing an out-of-date revision.
* Ignore the warning and save the page. Be sure to add the word "revert" (or "rv") to the edit summary, along with a short explanation if not obvious.
== Reverts and edit conflicts ==
Reverts never cause an edit conflict - if between you pressing edit, and then pressing post, someone else edits the page, their edits will be silently overwritten (though still in the page history). Beware of reverting high-traffic pages! Conversely, if it looks like someone has deleted your edits, consider if it's more likely that it's one of these unfortunate revision conflicts.
== Admin-only "rollback" link ==
On a user contributions page an admin has additional "rollback" links for contributions marked '''top''' (the last edit made by anybody to that article). The diff page showing the difference between an old and the current version of a page also has this link. Clicking on the link reverts to the last edit not made by the user being reverted. The feature is especially useful in the case of a known vandal, whose edits don't need to be checked before being reverted. An automatic edit summary, ''Reverted edits by X to last version by Y'', is added. This feature cannot be used when the last two edits were by the same user, and one wants to revert to the previous version only.
If between loading the User Contributions page and pressing ''rollback'', someone else has edited or rolled back the page already, the message ''Rollback failed'' will display with an explanation of the problem.
If the page has been created by the malicious user and nobody else has edited the page, clicking the rollback link gives the message ''Cannot revert edit; last contributor is only author of this article''. In this case delete the page.

==Hi there!==
[[Image:Example.jpg|thumb|Welcome!]]
Welcome to our wiki, and thank you for your contributions! There's a lot to do around here, so I hope you'll stay with us and make many more improvements.
:'''[[Special:Recentchanges|Recent changes]]''' is a great first stop, because you can see what other people are editing right this minute, and where you can help.
:If you haven't already, '''[[Special:Userlogin|please sign in]]''' and create a user name! It's free, and it'll help you keep track of all your edits.
:'''Questions?''' You can ask at [[Talk:Main Page]] or on the [[Help:Talk page|"discussion" page]] associated with each article, or post a message on [[User talk:{{{1}}}|my talk page]]!
:'''Need help?''' The [[project:Community Portal|Community Portal]] has an outline of the site, and pages to help you learn how to edit.
I'm really happy to have you here, and look forward to working with you!
:{{{2}}}
<noinclude>
==Using this template==
To welcome a new user, add this to the user's talk page:
<nowiki>{{subst:welcome | YourUsername | ~~~~}} </nowiki>
</noinclude>
Template talk:Welcome
1674
2623
2007-06-07T16:41:40Z
Default
==How to use the template==
Just type or copy the text <nowiki>{{subst:welcome|YourUsername |~~~~}}</nowiki> onto a user's Talk page then add your signature. As soon as you Save, the entry will lose its link to the template and become ordinary text, which you can edit to personalise it.
==Use of "subst:" prefix==
Using the prefix before any template name copies the template then cuts the connexion. If you omit the "subst:" the result copies just the same but will not be editable and will always show the current version of the template - probably not a good idea for a one-off welcoming message, although it is useful for many other templates.
==Edit it to make it more specific to the wiki==
For example, it could say "Welcome to the '''<font color=blue>XYZWV Wiki</font>'''". Maybe add a link to a page you particularly want new users to look at.
==Make another one just for you to use==
On your user page you could create a link to something like <nowiki>[[template:welcJG]]</nowiki> then make the resulting page a copy of [[template:welcome]] and modify it any way you like. Then you can type or paste <nowiki>{{subst:welcJG}}</nowiki> on a newcomer's page and not need further personalising.

Help:Copying from Wikipedia
1679
2596
2007-04-27T23:43:59Z
Default
'''Copying from Wikipedia''' to this wiki is permissible because both use the same license. However, it is necessary to include the proper acknowledgment so that readers can refer to the original and discover its authors.
Whenever you do such copying from a page in the English-language ("en") version of Wikipedia, please add the following template near the bottom of the page: "Wikipedia|" (inside double curly braces, i.e. <code><nowiki>{{Wikipedia|}}</nowiki></code>). Then before the final brackets paste the name of the Wikipedia article. You need to add similar attribution for other languages of Wikipedia and for other GFDL projects.
Note that Wikia sites are not intended to duplicate substantial portions of Wikipedia. You may copy all or part of an article (and its links and templates) to start off a page on the subject, but you are expected to adapt it so as to reflect this particular wiki's slant on the subject.

Welcome to the '''{{SITENAME}}'s sandbox'''!<br />
This page exists so that you can practice editing or formatting (see [[Help:Editing|Editing help]]) without changing any serious content. Feel free to try wiki editing out here first.<br />
There is a [[wikia:Help:Tutorial_1|tutorial]] on the Central (coordinating) Wikia that will step you through more of the things you can do. Wiki allow for rather complicated formatting. It can look overwhelming when you begin, but don't let it worry you. Just start with the basics... enter some text, and learn the other pieces as you go. Your content contributions are welcome and important. The wiki is a collaborative effort and others can help with formatting and other improvements.<br />
Best wishes!

Every Wikia has a '''mailing list'''. See the [http://www.wikia.com/mailman/listinfo/ list info] page for a list and options to subscribe. There is also a [http://www.wikia.com/mailman/listinfo/wikia-l mailing list for Wikia as a whole], which all users are encouraged to join. This list can be used for making project-wide announcements, or for asking for help on a wiki problem from the Wikia community.
All mailing lists are publicly readable, but you need to subscribe to be able to post to the lists. Posts from non-subscribers may be delayed or accidentally discarded, as they need to be approved by a list administrator to prevent spam.
Archives of posts to any list can be found at http://www.wikia.com/pipermail/*-l/<br />
Information on any list can be found at http://www.wikia.com/mailman/listinfo/*-l<br />
<nowiki>*</nowiki>Replace the asterisk with the [[w:name for the wiki|name of the wiki]] (as shown in the address bar above, between the "//" and the first dot).
Alternative means of communication include user [[help:talk page|talk page]]s, and the [[w:Wikia IRC channel|Wikia IRC channel]].
==Mailing list admins==
The default mailing list administrator is the person who requested the wiki. Their primary responsibility is helping people get subscribed to, or unsubscribed from, the list (as not everyone is comfortable with the tricky web interface). Note that subscription applications must be distinguished from spam, which should be deleted. DO NOT send spammers any messages, like "You need to subscribe", because this will increase the amount of spam you receive.
Other tasks include:
# cross-posting messages that pertain to other lists;
# gently suggesting that contributors keep on topic and/or avoid flaming each other.
List admins can change specific options on their mailing list and edit the moderation queue. The admin interface is reachable by using the link http://lists.wikia.com/mailman/admin/*-l where * is the name of the wiki. Not all changes are permitted. You cannot, for example, <!-- (can't mark them public if they want to be public??) mark users' email addresses as public if they have chosen to remain public, and you cannot --> prevent the lists being publicly readable.
See [[m:Mailing list administration|Mailing list administration]] on Meta.wikimedia for more details.

Help:User access levels
1762

2007-05-10T02:32:17Z
Default
Different users have access to different functions of the site. Wiki requesters are given administrator and bureaucrat access. They can make any other user on their wiki an administrator or bureaucrat.
==Anyone==
Anyone, including users without a user [[w:account|account]], can read the wiki as well as create new pages and edit unprotected pages. Any non-banned user is free to create a user account.
==Logged in users==
Users who have [[Special:Userlogin|created an account and logged in]] (this is free and only requires a username and password) can change the title of a page by moving it. (That is much better and faster than creating a new page and moving the content.)
Logged-in users can upload an image or other file to the wiki. There are restrictions on which file types can be uploaded.
Logged-in users can mark a page on recent changes as "[[w:Recent changes patrol|patrolled]]" to show other users that they have checked an edit.
Logged-in users can also customize the display of the wiki using [[Special:Preferences]], as well as maintain a page watchlist.
==Rollback==
Users with the "rollback" permission are able to revert vandalism and bad-faith edits by using the rollback link on diff pages and user contributions list. They are just like logged-in users, only with one extra button.
Bureaucrats can give users rollback rights by using the form at [[Special:Giverollback]]. The action will be logged on [[Special:Log/gvrollback]].
==Administrators ("sysops")==
Administrators can [[w:deletion|delete]] pages and page histories. They can also undelete a previously deleted page, or undelete specific revisions of it. Administrators can also delete and undelete uploaded files.
Administrators can lock (protect) a page so it cannot be edited or renamed by users without admin rights.
Administrators can block an IP address or user name from editing.
Administrators can [[w:Help:Revert|revert]] bad edits more easily using a "rollback" link which appears on diff pages and user contributions lists.
Administrators can edit the [[w:MediaWiki namespace|MediaWiki namespace]] to make changes to the interface.
On Wikipedia, an admin is defined as a "trusted user". You should be aware that this might ''not'' be the case on Wikia. The requester of a wiki will be given admin access to that wiki on the [[MeatBall:PrincipleOfFirstTrust|Principle of First Trust]]. If a user later turns out to be irresponsible with the admin access, it may be removed by [[Special:Listusers/staff|staff]] at any time.
For details, see the [[Help:Administrators' how-to guide|administrators' how-to guide]].
==Bureaucrats==
A bureaucrat can make other users into bureaucrats or administrators on the wiki where they are a bureaucrat and give trusted users a [[Help:GiveRollback|rollback function]] on their own wiki. They are not currently able to remove admin access from any user. Please contact [[User:Angela|Angela]] if you need admin access removed from any user.
===Instructions for bureaucrats===
(''Please see [[Wikia:Help:User access levels#Instructions for bureaucrats|Central Wikia help page]] for full details.'')
Briefly, the commonest duties are:
#Bureaucrat can grant or revoke rollback rights for users through [[Special:Giverollback]].
#Bureaucrats can turn other users into admins or bureaucrats using [[Special:Makesysop]]. There is a link to this on the list of [[Special:Specialpages|special pages]].
==Staff==
Some Wikia staff members have full access to all wikis. They will be shown in [[Special:Listusers/staff]] on any wiki. Please see [[w:contact us|contact us]] for details on how to contact Wikia staff.

Welcome to this Wikia!
==Welcome from across the Ditch!!==
Seems I got in first after seeing the site listed in "New wikis this week" and finding nobody had made any edits in the 8 days since you were given your exciting new powers.
There are now a couple of articles and lots of nice red links to facilitate the creation of a dozen more.
Enjoy! Email me if you really need help - but [[Help:Contents]] leads you in the right directions. Read all of the existing "help" pages thoroughly (as well as all the category pages) unless you're an old hand at wikis.

The traditional owners of the Warraroon Reserve are the Gai-mariagal people, who are part of the Eora Nation.
'''Culture'''
Dennis Foley (2001), a descendent of the Gai-mariagal people, writes about his people and their customs in a book named "Repossession of our spirit: Traditional owners of Northern Sydney". He explains that the overall clan association of the Gai-mariagal people is comprised of six major family groups, three of which he can mention, the Gaimai, the Gatlay and the Gammeray. (p 10). He writes:
"Ours is a matriarchal society, Perhaps the most powerful consequence of this is that fresh water is a determining factor in delineating many clan boundaries. The watershed area, from the ridge tops and to where the water flows, determines clan areas. Women's law governed fresh water. When we refer to mother earth, the control of the fresh water is the law of the woman and such law controls us. In the presence of women, men cannot take water straight from the stream. They must ask permission of their womenfolk first. When a Gai-mariagal male is hot and thirsty you can see why it pays for us to be on good terms with our womenfolk (or mother in law). The early settlers saw this as mens' domination over women when they observed women bringing water to the man. Totally incorrect, the British imposed their own male dominant societal norms and misinterpreted the women's function of getting water for the male as being subservient. In fact it is the opposite- the females control the water, they control how much the males can drink in their presence.
...
"The laws of water determine our land, our laws are determined by the seasons and our seasons have become as one with our old people and their knowledge. In the western context we believe that there are seven seasons as compared to the European four. Our journey or progression in life is also seen as a journey through seven seasons or stages. As we are 'saltwater' people, fresh water is life and is respected as a scarce commodity. This has resulted in many intricate and complex issues in our law and beliefs, far too complex for this publication. As then and only then can we respect our mother the earth. Without our own self-respect and our love for our mother we have nothing. Our relationship and respect for such a simple thing as fresh water highlights the simplicity yet complexity of our beliefs. Many non-indigenous people take for granted a resource such as fresh drinking water until they don't have any. This indicates the difference between our races; we respect it, cherish it and preserve it when we have it, not when it's gone. This is an indication of our resource management philosophy, which is also an economic philosophy of the minimalist environmental impact of respecting resources for long-term survival and sustainable land-use management." (p 12)
Foley describes some important places in the Lane Cove area, and their cultural significance:
"The Western catchment of the Lane Cove River denotes our western boundary and is an important area. North of the burial area were a series of ceremonial rings used in "sorry business" (mourning) and other related inter-clan ceremonies. This area was once a mature aged forest with towering trees full of wildlife that supported many people. The tributaries of the Lane Cove River before their destruction had numerous fertile floodbanks that were kept clear for yam propagation...
"The Upper area of the Lane Cove River... was once full of turtle, fish and huge cod that were as big as a full-grown wombat. The area abounded with duck and other aquatic birds. It was and still is home to a large flock of sulphur-crested cockatoos, whom we believe are the spirits of many of our old people who have not returned to the mortal world. They are there as birds to warn and guide us...
"Where the salt water and the fresh water meet is a connection between two worlds of thought and law. In the saltwater area, lurking in the shadows was a red-eyed monster in the form of a large lizard; perhaps this was once mistaken for a rogue crocodile- or was it a beast from another time? It fits a similar legend that others call a Yowie. When the creature is near, the stench from its decaying flesh can overpower a victim and our people rarely venture into the mangroves in its habitat... Initiated men, not afraid of the beast, would fish and hunt in its environs, but they would never enter the water in these areas or go there at dusk or night. As children we were told of these things and on our many picnic trips to the Lane Cove area we would be scolded if we even looked like going towards the salt water.

Denis Foley continues:
"North of Fullers Bridge, on the Western side in the freshwater area, was a large campsite that still exists to some extent. It is protected by the hills from Southerly and Westerly winds, and catches the early rays of the day to warm the campsite that was used by the Woyan (Pemulwuy) during his winder campaigns against the British. Here he could rest, feed his followers and hide easily from the British in almost total seclusion. A few strategically planned sentries gave an early warning system that allowed him to live in this area safely. (pp. 22-23)

Warraroon Reserve is part of the Sydney Bioregion, which is classified as one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.
Over ---- plant species are endemic to the Sydney region.
Doug Benson and Jocelyn Howell (1990) write:
"In Warraroon Road Reserve, Elaeocarpus reticulatus and Pittosporum undulatum are abundant beneath large trees of Angophora costata along the upper reaches of the creek. The dense understory includes Bursaria spinosa, usually a sign of soil fertility, and three species of Cyathea, while ground cover plants include Dianella revoluta and Pteridium esculentum. Saltmarsh and mangroves are still found lower down in Hodgson Park where the creek flows into Tambourine Bay."

'''Greenwich''' is a [[Wikipedia:suburb|suburb]] on the [[North Shore (Sydney)|North Shore]] of [[Sydney]], in the state of [[New South Wales]], [[Australia]]. Greenwich is located 7 km north-west of the [[Sydney central business district]], in the [[Local Government Areas in Australia|local government area]] of the [[Municipality of Lane Cove]]. The suburb occupies a peninsula on the northern side of [[Sydney Harbour]], at the opening of the [[Lane Cove River]].
==Characteristics==
The suburb's name is derived from its namesake [[Wikipedia:Greenwich|Greenwich]], by the banks of the [[Wikipedia:Thames|Thames]] in [[Wikipedia:London|London]]. It features beautiful harbour views, a few pockets of [[bushland]], a few local shops, a harbour swimming pool (with shark net) and [[Greenwich Public School]]. It is a short walking distance from trains, buses and ferries, as well as numerous restaurants and cafes. Every four years the [[Greenwich Village Games]] are held, featuring numerous sports and competitions.
Given the suburb's boundaries with [[Lane Cove National Park]], it features considerable wildlife. This may be due to the vast array of [[ecosystem]]s within such a small area, including [[rainforest]] and [[mangrove]]s.

'''Lane Cove''' is a [[suburb]] in the [[Municipality of Lane Cove]], on the [[North Shore (Sydney)|North Shore]] of [[Sydney]], in the state of [[New South Wales]], [[Australia]]. Some of the following discussion extends to other suburbs in the municipality.
== Characteristics ==
Lane Cove has a large community feel that centres on the "plaza" and the shopping and restaurant centre that stretches across [[Longueville Road]] and down [[Burns Bay Road]]. There are a number of small specialty stores in this area, as well as a large number of restaurants and cafes. At the end of Longueville Road is the [[Longueville Hotel]]. This is the only [[pub]] in the local area.
[[Image:Lane Cove, New South Wales Mall.jpg|left|thumbnail|Pedestrian Plaza in Lane Cove, taken [[5 April]] [[2005]] facing East.]]
Although there are some historical properties in the area, the general atmosphere is one of modernity. From the Lane Cove Swimming Pool to the townhouse complexes along the main road to Longueville, Lane Cove has a very suburban feel that is unusual so close to the city.
Around 16% of the area is devoted to public recreational areas including [[Burns Bay Park]], [[Tambourine Bay Park]], and [[Tantallon Oval]]. As well as this there is a large amount of [[bushland]] surrounding the river's edge especially near [[Riverview]]. Lane Cove also has many small creeks and rivers that flow through it and therefore has many expanses of bushland. The [[Lane Cove River]] is the largest river in the area.
Although Lane Cove is primarily a residential area, it contains several large businesses, including poker machine manufacturing company [[Aristocrat Leisure Limited]], the Australian headquarters of statistical software company [[SAS Institute|SAS]], and the headquarters of hearing implant developer and manufacturer [[Cochlear Limited]].
== History ==
Before the [[First Fleet]] arrived, the area was inhabited by the [[Cam-mer-ray-gal]] Group of the [[Ku-ring-gai]] Aboriginal Tribe.
However, once the white settlers had arrived, it was Lieutenant Ralph Clark who first landed not too far from the entrance to the Lane Cove River on [[14 February]] [[1790]].
There are a number of possibilities of the origin of the name "Lane Cove". The first written use of the name was by Lieutenant William Bradley after he had just sailed along the river in [[1788]]. Some have argued that the it was named after Lieutenant Michael Lane, a respected cartographer, who had once worked with [[Captain James Cook|Captain Cook]]. Others say that it was in honour of John Lane, who was the son of the London Lord Mayor at the time as well as a good friend of the first Governor, [[Arthur Phillip]]. In any case, the name stuck, and by the 1800s was being used to refer to all the land north of the river.
There were land grants in [[1794]] to some privates and non-commissioned officers in the New South Wales Corp, but not many of these grants were actually settled, as the steep, timbered land was not particularly habitable. However, Lane Cove was an excellent source for timber and other commodities that the settlers required. During the 19th century, farms and dairies were also established. There were also many industrial and manufacturing factories constructed around [[Greenwich]].
Most of the residential growth in the area however occurred after [[Second World War]] when returning soldiers were granted blocks of land around Lane Cove. The land value, which was cheap during this time, surged during the 1980s and 1990s when the water views, large suburban blocks, ease of transport and quiet streets became hugely popular. [[Longueville]] with its beautiful views of the city is one of the richest suburbs in Sydney.
[[Robert Dessaix]]'s autobiography, ''A Mother's Disgrace'', contains a memoir of growing up in Lane Cove in the [[1950s]].
== Population ==
According to the 2001 Census, there were 30756 people living in the municipality, including 14870 males (48.35%) and 15886 females (51.65%). The majority (64.6%) were born in Australia, with the other main countries of birth being the [[United Kingdom]] (5.9%), [[New Zealand]] (2.7%) and [[China]] (1.9%). The most popular type of dwelling was a separate house (48.9%).
== Transportation ==
The suburb is notable for many Sydney car-commuters as it is the meeting point of the [[Gore Hill Freeway]], which brings cars from the city, the airport and the south, with two major roads - the [[Pacific Highway (Australia)|Pacific Highway]] which travels north and [[Epping Road]] which goes north-west. The huge amount of traffic that converges at these intersections during peak hours of the day has made some of the sections of road (in particular the [[Epping Road]]-[[Longueville Road]] intersection) considered some of the worst in Sydney. The community outcry led to the construction of the [[Lane Cove Tunnel]], which opened on Sunday [[25 March]] [[2007]] and takes vehicles straight from the Gore Hill Expressway to the [[M2 Hills Motorway|M2]], which means that a car can travel all the way from [[Baulkham Hills Shire|Baulkham Hills]] to the [[Kingsford Smith International Airport|airport]] without having to go through a single set of traffic lights (although there are tolls to pay in each direction).
The closest train stations are [[Chatswood railway station, Sydney|Chatswood]] and [[Artarmon railway station, Sydney|Artarmon]], and with this distance it is not surprising that according to the 2001 census, only 4.1% of the population travelled to work by train alone. Other ways to travel include the train and bus (1.7%), walking or cycling (5.9%), the bus only (14.3%) and car (71.0%).
There is also a ferry that travels someway down the [[Lane Cove River]], stopping at [[Longueville Wharf]] and [[Greenwich Wharf]].

=== Lane Cove Library ===
[[Image:Lane Cove, New South Wales Library.jpg|thumb|right|Lane Cove Library, taken [[5 April]], [[2005]]]]
Lane Cove Library is operated by the council and is a member of the [http://www.shorelink.nsw.gov.au Shorelink Library Network], allowing residents to borrow books from libraries throughout the Lower North Shore. Council passed a vote in late [[2004]] for a major shopping retailer to redevelop parts of Lane Cove, which would also require the construction of a new library.
=== Lane Cove Aquatic Centre ===
Lane Cove Aquatic centre was operated by Lane Cove Council and was developed recently in 2003. It contains a 50-metre swimming pool which was, incidentally, there before the new renovations. In the new block, there is a 25-metre swimming pool along with a shallow pool for toddlers and young children. There is also an aquatic section where there are water springs and many other facilities including a sauna and spa. For visitors' personal needs, there is also a kiosk.

'''Longueville''' is a suburb of [[Sydney]], [[Australia]], and is part of the [[Municipality of Lane Cove|Lane Cove]] area. One of the most beautiful and most expensive localities of [[Lower Northern Sydney]] (Sydney Lower North Shore), Longueville is located approximately 8 km north-west of Sydney City and lies on the [[Lane Cove River]]. The suburb is a leafy peninsula nestled between [[Tambourine Bay]] and [[Woodford Bay]].
Longueville has become a popular suburb of Sydney since the 1990s<!--, with no home having sold for less than AUD$1 million since 1995 {{Fact|date=February 2007}}-->. Despite the swelling property values, the suburb maintains a sense of local community, respectful values, and a sense of 'old money' that makes it a safe place to live. Evaluated to be the 11th most expensive suburb in Sydney in ''Home Owners guide 2004''.
The suburb is said to have been founded by a French explorer of the same name, who named the main streets after his three daughters, Christina, Lucretia, and Arabella.
Longueville was the childhood home of actress [[Nicole Kidman]], artist [[Brett Whiteley]], and tennis player [[John Newcombe]]. [[Patrick O'Farrell]], the historian of Catholic Australia, lived there for many years.

'''Northwood''', in the [[Municipality of Lane Cove]], is a [[suburb]] of [[Sydney]], in the state of [[New South Wales]], [[Australia]]. It remains famous for being the smallest suburb in Sydney. Northwood is approximately 7 km north-west of the Sydney CBD; many of its homes look down on [[Woodford Bay]]. Property consists entirely of free-standing houses. The 2005 [[Sydney Morning Herald]] Homes guide found Northwood to be the 19th most expensive suburb in Sydney.
The nearest railway station is at [[St Leonards, New South Wales|St. Leonards]], and buses run frequently through the area. [[Northwood ferry wharf]] is popular among office workers in the CBD as [[Circular Quay]] is only a 5-minute ferry ride away.
Northwood was the home of landscape artist [[Lloyd Rees]] for many years before his death in [[1988]]. Many of his later paintings are of the area.

<!--{{shortcut|[[WP:COORD]]}}-->
This template, {{tl|coord}}, produces a link to a list of map sources, based on the geographical coordinates and other parameters, and provides a standardised notation for the coordinates.
The template is for [[WGS84]] geographical coordinates ([[latitude]];[[longitude]]) on [[Earth]], which can be entered in either decimal notation, or degrees/minutes/seconds parameters, with the appropriate precision.
It links to {{Coor URL}}, then displays the coordinates.
The template outputs data in:
* Degree/minutes/seconds ("DMS", precision is degrees, or degrees/minutes, or degrees/minutes/seconds, based on input)
* Decimal (precision by number of decimal places, based on input)
** [[Image:Geo-microformat-button.png|button to indicate the presence of a Geo microformat|This button indicates the presence of a Geo microformat on a page]] A computer-readable [[Geo (microformat)|Geo microformat]].
{{tl|coord}} will imminently be used by tools which parse the raw Wikipedia database dumps, such as [[Google Earth]]. The original template '''must not''' be modified without reference to that project ([[User talk:Gmaxwell#The benefit of hindsight|link needed]]).
See also [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates]].
==Superseded templates==
This single template supersedes {{tl|coor d}}, {{tl|coor dm}}, {{tl|coor dms}}, {{tl|coor at d}}, {{tl|coor at dm}}, {{tl|coor at dms}}, {{tl|coor title d}}, {{tl|coor title dm}}, and {{tl|coor title dms}}. All parameters can be used as before - see [[#Usage|Usage]].
Examples:
<table class="prettytable">
<tr><td>{{coord|12|34|N|45|33|W|'''display=title'''}}</td><td>Replaces {{coor '''title''' dm|12|34|N|45|67|W}}</td></tr>
<tr><td>{{coord|12|34|12|N|45|33|45|W|'''display=inline,title'''}}</td><td>Replaces {{coor '''at''' dms|12|34|12|N|45|33|45|W}}</td></tr>
<tr><td>{{coord|10.2|-20.3|'''display=inline'''}} or {{coord|10.2|-20.3}}</td><td>Replaces {{coor d|10.2|N|-20.3|E}}</td></tr>
</table>
==Display==
By default coordinates are displayed in the format in which they are specified.
To always display coordinates as DMS values, add this to [[Special:Mypage/monobook.css|your monobook.css]]:
:<code>.geo-default { display: inline } .geo-nondefault { display: inline } <br />.geo-dec { display: none } .geo-dms { display: inline }</code>
To always display coordinates as decimal values, add this to [[Special:Mypage/monobook.css|your monobook.css]]:
:<code>.geo-default { display: inline } .geo-nondefault { display: inline }<br />.geo-dec { display: inline } .geo-dms { display: none }</code>
To display coordinates in both formats, add this to [[Special:Mypage/monobook.css|your monobook.css]]:
:<code>.geo-default { display: inline } .geo-nondefault { display: inline }<br />.geo-dec { display: inline } .geo-dms { display: inline }<br />.geo-multi-punct { display: inline }</code>
If CSS is disabled, or you have an old copy of [[MediaWiki:Common.css]] cached, you will see both formats. (The cache for Common.css takes 31 days to expire, and the changes were made 2007-04-04. You can either clear your cache or manually refresh this URL: [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Common.css&usemsgcache=yes&action=raw&ctype=text/css&smaxage=2678400].)
See also [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Geographical coordinates]].
== Usage ==
{{coord|''latitude''|''longitude''|''parameters''|display=''display''}}
{{coord|''dd''|''N/S''|''dd''|''E/W''|''parameters''|display=''display''}}
{{coord|''dd''|''mm''|''N/S''|''dd''|''mm''|''E/W''|''parameters''|display=''display''}}
{{coord|''dd''|''mm''|''ss''|''N/S''|''dd''|''mm''|''ss''|''E/W''|''parameters''|display=''display''}}
* ''parameters'', which are optional, can be any ''type:'', ''region:'', or ''scale:'' setting which is recognised by the map server, such as the popular <code>type:city</code> and <code>type:landmark options</code>. See [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#Parameters]] for a comprehensive list.
* ''display'', which is optional, can be one of the following:
** <code>inline</code> (default): display the coordinate inline
** <code>title</code>: display the coordinate by the article title, right-justified (replaces {{tl|coor title dms}} family)
** <code>inline,title</code>: display both inline and at title (replaces {{tl|coor at dms}} family)
Note: using the <code>title</code> attribute indicates that the coordinates apply to the article, and not just one of (perhaps many) places mentioned in it — so it should only be omitted in the latter case. It will be used to add the article to services such as Google Earth layers.

== Usage ==
This template produces a link to a list of map sources, based on the geographical coordinates and other parameters, concatenated into one template parameter. The other template parameter is the link label.
Use:
:<tt><nowiki>{{coor|cc|tt}}</nowiki></tt>
Where:
* ''cc'' is the coordinate written in the format required by the [[Wikipedia:Special:Mapsources]] page. For example, for the coordinate '''59° 55′ N 10° 44′ E''', use: <tt>'''59_55_N_10_44_E'''</tt>.
* ''tt'' is the text appearing in the link
==Implementation details==
===Geo tag===
To define a geographical point, the [[m:Gis|Mediawiki '''gis''' extension]] is required. For further information, see the [[m:Gis geo tag|Mediawiki documentation]].
:''NOTE: This extension is available, but is currently not enabled for Wikipedia. The functionality is thus currently only available via the [[template:coor]] family, which is an interim solution, e.g.
:*''<nowiki>{{coor d|48.776667|N|121.814167|W|}}</nowiki> gives {{coor d|48.776667|N|121.814167|W|}}''
:*''<nowiki>{{coor dm|48|46.600|N|121|48.850|W|}} </nowiki> gives {{coor dm|48|46.600|N|121|48.850|W|}}''
:*''<nowiki>{{coor dms|48|46|36|N|121|48|51|W|}} </nowiki> gives {{coor dms|48|46|36|N|121|48|51|W|}}''
:On the surface of the earth, 1 [[Wikipedia:minute of arc|minute of arc]] of latitude corresponds to 1.0 [[Wikipedia:nautical mile|nautical mile]] or 1.852 [[Wikipedia:kilometer|kilometer]], whereas, 1 arc second of latitude corresponds to 30.8667 meters (101.269 ft). Because of the numerical equivalence of minute of arc and nautical mile measures, many people find minutes, in degree-minute (dm) format easier to comprehend than arc seconds in degree-minute-second (dms) format, e.g., for navigation.
The geo tag specifies the coordinates as degrees/minutes/seconds of latitude and longitude, like this:
:<tt><nowiki><geo>48 46 36 N 121 48 51 W</geo></nowiki></tt>.
In the finished article, the tag will appear as
{{coor dms|48|46|36|N|121|48|51|W|}}.
Seconds, or minutes and seconds, may be omitted. Optionally, the precision of the smallest unit used may be increased using decimals.
==== Parameters ====
Following the geographical coordinate, further parameters can optionally be supplied, separated by underscores. This will help in finding suitable map resources, and will become more important when the [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimaps Wikimaps] become fully functional.
===== type:''T'' =====
Sets the type of this location, which will be used for the reverse mapping of the points. Will also set the default map scale. Types are:

Sample:
*<nowiki>{{coor dm|46|43|N|7|58|E|type:mountain}} </nowiki> gives {{coor dm|46|43|N|7|58|E|type:mountain}}
===== scale:''N'' =====
Sets the desired map [[Wikipedia:scale (map)|scale]] as 1:''N''. This will override the default scale. The ''scale:'' prefix can be omitted.
===== region:''R'' =====
Sets the preferred map region of coverage, used in selecting appropriate map resources for the area. The region should be supplied as either a two character [[Wikipedia:ISO 3166-1 alpha-2|ISO 3166-1 alpha-2]] country code, or an [[Wikipedia:ISO 3166-2|ISO 3166-2]] region code. Examples:
* '''US''' [[United States]]
* '''CA''' [[Canada]]
* '''DE''' [[Germany]]
* '''DE-TH''' [[Germany]], [[Thuringia]]
* '''CH''' [[Switzerland]]
* '''FR''' [[France]]
* '''GB''' [[United Kingdom]]

* '''BR''' [[Brazil]]
* '''AU''' [[Australia]]
* '''NO-03''' [[Oslo]], [[Norway]]
* '''NL''' [[Netherlands]]
* '''LK''' [[Sri Lanka]]
Sample:
*<nowiki>{{coor dms|46|57|08.66|N|7|26|22.50|E|region:CH_type:landmark}}</nowiki> enables the subpage for Switzerland at {{coor dms|46|57|08.66|N|7|26|22.50|E|region:CH_type:landmark}}.
*<nowiki>{{coor dms|52|30|59|N|13|22|39|E|region:DE-BB_type:city}}</nowiki> enables the subpage for Germany at {{coor dms|52|30|59|N|13|22|39|E|region:DE-BB_type:city}}.
===== globe:''G'' =====
Specifies other worlds than [[Wikipedia:earth|earth]]. Such as '''[[Wikipedia:Moon|Moon]]'''.
===== source:''S'' =====
Specifies, where present, the data source and data format/datum, and optionally the original data, presented in parentheses. This is initially primarily intended for use by geotagging robots, so that data is not blindly repeatedly copied from format to format and Wikipedia to Wikipedia, with progressive loss of precision and attributability.
Examples:
* A lat/long geotag derived from an [[Wikipedia:Ordnance Survey|Ordnance Survey]] [[Wikipedia:British national grid reference system|National Grid Reference]] NM 435 355 found in the English-language Wikipedia would be tagged as "source:enwiki-osgb36(NM435355)"
* A latitude-longitude location sourced from data taken from the German-language Wikipedia would be tagged as "source:dewiki" -- and so on, for other language codes;
* A location sourced from the public domain [[Wikipedia:GeoNet Names Server|GeoNet Names Server]] database would be tagged as "source:GNS". No datum or format information is needed, since by default all Wikipedia coordinates are in latitude/longitude format based on the [[Wikipedia:WGS84|WGS84]] datum. Similarly, U.S. locations sourced from the similar public domain [[Wikipedia:GNIS|GNIS]] database would be tagged as "source:GNIS".
The main coordinates templates (see below) are generally used instead of this template.

Lane Cove National Park

From Wikipedia with acknowledgment
'''Lane Cove National Park''' is a small national park located within metropolitain [[Sydney]]. The park is
located about 10 km north-west of the Sydney CBD. The park consists of land near the banks of the [[Lane Cove River]], which rises
near [[Hornsby]] and flows generally south-east into [[Sydney Harbour]].
The park includes areas of land which are part of [[Ku-Ring-Gai]], [[Ryde]], and Hornsby local government areas with small areas of the
park in [[Willoughby]], [[Lane Cove]] and [[Hunter's Hill]] local government area on the banks of the lower reaches of the river. The park is surrounded on all sides by developed suburban areas and it is nowhere more than 1 kilometre wide. Much of the park is of fairly rugged terrain on the slopes of the river valley and covered by forest. The characteristics of the forest vary depending upon
soils and topography, historical logging and clearing, and accessibility. Parts of the park are affected by weed infestations.
The central section of the park, between [[de Burgh's Bridge]] on [[Metroad_3|Metroad 3]], and [[Fullers Bridge|Fuller's Bridge]], was set aside as a park in the [[1920s]] and developed with picnic areas interspersed in the forest along the banks of the river. A weir was constructed near Fuller's Bridge which converted the middle section of the river from tidal [[salt-water]] to a [[fresh-water]] area with constant water level suitable for recreational use in rowing boats and canoes. This area was managed by a trust and was called [[Lane Cove River Park]]. In 1982, the NSW Government took over direct control of the park
which was then called [[Lane Cove Regional Park]]. Various nearby areas of undeveloped government land near the river upstream and downstream from the central area of the park were added to the park. It became a National Park in [[1992]].
